Ever put in time, money, and real effort into your skincare, only for your skin to show you zero respect?
Yeah. I’ve been there.
For a long time, I blamed my skin, the products I used, even my environment. But the truth? It wasn’t any of those. It turned out that consistent mistakes in my routine were quietly slowing my progress. Once I became aware of them, I could make better choices and approach my skincare more intentionally and give my skin the best foundation to thrive.
Here are five skincare mistakes I’m not making this year…….
- Not Considering My Skin Type
No matter how good a shoe looks, if it doesn’t fit, it simply won’t work. Skincare is no different.
Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. What works for oily skin can worsen dryness, and products made for dry skin can clog pores if you’re acne-prone. Ignoring your skin type often leads to irritation, breakouts, or results that just don’t last.
Understanding whether your skin is oily, dry, combination, or sensitive helps you choose the right cleanser, moisturiser, and treatments. And yes, it can be confusing… I used to spend hours guessing which Korean skincare products might work for me. Now, I just shop based on my skin type and specific concerns through MY Lab Africa’s curated skincare collections, making my routine easier and more effective.
This year: I’m considering my skin type first and not jumping on every skincare trend.

2. Touching My Face Often
This one feels harmless, but it does real damage, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Our hands touch countless surfaces daily, picking up dirt and bacteria. Every time we touch our face, we transfer all of that directly onto our skin. The outcome? Irritation, inflammation, and breakouts.
Keeping my hands off my face is my first line of defence. When my skin feels irritated, I rely on Mediheal Madecassoside Blemish Pads and TIAM Alpha-5 Mela Care Cream to soothe inflammation, strengthen my skin barrier, and prevent breakouts.
This year: I’m keeping my hands off my face, using Mediheal pure calming mask and letting my skin breathe.
3. Over-Cleansing or Over-Exfoliating
More is not always better in Korean skincare, and cleansing or exfoliating is where many people get it wrong.
Cleansing too often or exfoliating excessively strips the skin of its natural oils and weakens the skin barrier. Once your barrier is compromised, you’re more likely to experience sensitivity, breakouts, and uneven texture and nobody wants that.
To help with skin barrier repair, I highly recommend the Aromer recover blooming serum.
This year: Gentle cleansing only. I’m not at war with my skin.

4. Not Moisturising
Skipping moisturiser especially on hot days used to be a habit of mine. And yes, this mistake is more common among people with oily skin.
But here is the problem: when your skin lacks moisture, it produces more oil to compensate, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Moisturising keeps the skin balanced, protected, and healthy you just need the right one for your skin type.
I personally love the TIAM Snail & Azulene Calmfort Cream from MY Lab Africa for its skin-repair and deep-hydration benefits, especially for sensitive skin.
This year: Moisturiser is non-negotiable. morning and night.
5. Skipping Sunscreen
Sunscreen is not optional. And it’s not just for days when the sun feels aggressive.
Unprotected UV exposure leads to hyperpigmentation, premature ageing, and long-term skin damage. And no, melanin does not exempt you. Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves also don’t provide full protection.
Whether your skin is oily, dry, sensitive, or acne-prone, there is a Korean Sunscreen for you.
This year: Sunscreen (SPF 50 and above), every single day. No exceptions.
In Conclusion
Healthy skin isn’t built overnight, and it’s never about one “miracle” product. It comes from understanding your skin type, protecting your skin barrier, and staying consistent with habits that support long-term skin health.
By avoiding these common skincare mistakes and choosing Korean skincare products that are formulated for your skin concerns, your routine becomes simpler and you enjoy the benefits of Korean skincare. Curating my routine through MY Lab Africa has helped me approach skincare more intentionally.
If your 2026 is about better habits, clearer skin, and real results, this is a good place to start.
